Pastoral Burnout: How do recognize it? What do you do about it?

In the aftermath of 9-11, Tim Keller observed that around 18 months after the towers fell, pastors began falling. For those 550 days immediately following the disaster, spiritual leaders were carried along by adrenalin, prayer, and the extreme focus required.  And then they crashed.

We are now at a similar point from the onset of the COVID Pandemic in the Spring of 2020. The effects of the last 18 months are now coming to call, and burnout tops the list. According to Soul Shepherding:

  • 75% of pastors report being “extremely stressed” or “highly stressed”
  • 90% work between 55 to 75 hours per week
  • 90% feel fatigued and worn out every week
